What is a Bertication I hear you say?
Bertie is our aged campervan. We bought him in July 2013 as a means of being able to have cheaper holidays in and around the UK which would allow my husband and I the freedom to go pretty much anywhere we wanted to go for our photography.
Over the years we have visited many places, staying on campsites and also wild camping in the mountains of Scotland and Wales.
Bertie is more than just a campervan - it is a mobile coffee pot (for me), a mobile wind break for doing photography from the comfort of being inside whilst the weather outside is blowing a hooley or pouring with rain.
Although now getting quite old - Bertie continues to serve us well and we look forward to many more happy years camping. One of the greatest benefits is that in most cases you can rock up pretty close to the location that you want to photograph as dawn - I know who would want to do that?? have a good night's sleep and then in the morning - poke your head through the curtains and see if it worth getting out of bed to shoot the dawn. If its good, then get dressed, walk to the pre-determined spot, wait for the dawn, take the shots and then return to the van for hot tea and breakfast, it is it not good, then roll over and get some more sleep.
When out doing photography, I am known as the mad waders woman. Being short, only 5ft 1 I find that sometimes the shot I want means standing in the middle of some form of water, be that a stream, a river or the sea. Having purchased some waders I now can pretty much stand in water up to my armpits without getting wet!
Two other benefits of waders is - they protect me from the cold and I never have to worry about losing my lenses and filters when I am moving around and they are not attached to the camera as I can just pop them in the inside pocket as the furthest they can fall is into one of the legs of my waders - result!
